In Europe, a sharp tack starboard … Macron dissolves parliament ... a lavish (fin de regime?) dinner at the Elysée … Vietnam in the Spratlys … Israel's Gantz quits… Cartoonist Hermann on Modi wounded
In so many ways on so many levels … did Macron not see what happened to the last president who called a snap election…. 1997 …. Jacques Chirac with equal hubris….barricaded in the Elysee for two more years while Socialist Lionel Jospin ran the government !!
"The results all reflect quite simply a new, dark wave rolling across the continent". Hmmm....a bit of editorializing here from our objective journalist?
Great survey, as usual. Unusual to hear about Vietnam. Glad to hear Lelouche is still mobile. As usual, other news is catastrophic.
The only sunbeam in France is that half the electorate didn't show up, so perhaps it's an organized protest with unknown impact on the Palais du Luxembourg and Bourbon. I suppose that's why Macron is jumping to try to hang onto his parliament.
My biggest worry is for Ukraine. I had to laugh at Le Monde's AI translation of some of the party names, hilarious. Stay well and enjoy the Olympics!
Macron should have consulted with David first. The European results are calamitous.
Thank you, David, for this succinct encapsulation of the European elections and what they portend.
I value your Sunday letters!
You are so kind, Brenda ! Makes all this work so worthwhile !!
