you are so very kind, professor! Yes, Putin seizures are most welcome indeed....as for Russia in the Sahel....this is not a good sign, but you are correct....a story that Unleashed will indeed continue to monitor closely. Sadly the English-language press is largely less vigilant !

Thank you, David, for highlighting the plight of Cairo, Illinois.

I grew up in a small Iowa town which has suffered the same fate.

Some say the American Midwest is 'emptying out.'

I have read articles advocating the abandonment of agriculture to enable the tall prairie grasses to return. Then, a repopulation of the place with American Bison, which once roamed the North American grasslands in the millions.

I always learn knew things when reading your Substack.

With thanks,

Brenda Elthon

David, this is a breathtaking survey, I didn't know how to collect me wits.

Breathtaking or heartbreaking, pick your word, given the world scenario.

Glad to see the stats on population decline. Anti-immigration flaks are nativists.

The stuff about China's 'official position' on Taiwan urges recall of history. The Kuomintang withdrew to Taiwan Island, invading it as a Chinese province, after the civil war, not as an island, and established Taipei as the capital of 'The Republic of China'; so BOTH sides do not relinquish title to 'China', except that an 'independence' movement is certainly in place.

The spread of Putin shadow into Africa, etc. is horrifying; however, I can't see how the Biden Admin. has a choice in Niger; fighting the Russian octopus requires respect for sitting governments. There are many other instruments than another invading army, I suppose.

Thanks for the brilliant coverage of the cartoonists, particularly the Iranian. With your perfect French, you might provide readers the many-layered translation of the title Le Canard enchaîné: Canard, French slang, means 'potshot', 'false rumor', 'news rag', and the verb canarder means 'to take potshots'; also, enchaîné means, not only chained, but 'continuously' or 'follow-up', i.e., 'taking one potshot after another in a satirical rag'.

Thank you for info on the seizure of Putin's properties in France. A good start.

And for the Russian intrusion into Niger -- a continuing and expanding story.

The Economist objects to the colonists' federalism, okay. But I'd like to see this penciled out: Yet net immigration, too, has been falling since the 1990s.
