Gratitude…America's biggest dangers…COP28 with any hope?...Oil war looms in Guyana…Journos under siege…Moldova next in Putin's gunsights…Toys for Ukraine's children…And cartoonist Brandan on Netanyahu
You know I like to consider Unleashed providing a similar service for the world that Heather does for America … holding up a mirror each week to the World through the prism of history.
Clearly, Ann, after a long career that has ranged from The New York Times to CBS News to Bloomberg to Forbes to World Policy Journal, each with remarkable audiences, SubStack and Andelman Unleashed has been challenge...but one that I believe is so very much worthwhile. I feel I have a close and direct relationship with each of my readers since they have ELECTED to subscribe, chosen to read and hear my views, my perspectives on the world. So that is immensely gratifying. All I ask from each is that they keep reading and subscribing and tell others. My subscripton base grew 65% since last Wednesday when just one such reader did just that!
All the best....and do help me reach an ever-wider audience ;-))
There's lots of good stuff today, as always, the attention to Moldova being among the important highlights. But David smartly calls attention to possible hostilities between Guyana and madcap Venezuela over a major oil field. This aggression by Venezuela echoes a late 19th century dispute between the two places that was mediated with U.S. help back then. There is no reason, except Maduro's deflection and oil avarice for Venezuela's claims to arise again now.
Very interesting; thank you for the connection, David and Robert! (Guyana and Venezuela). The cartoon is horrendously outstanding. Yes, one cartoon worth so very many words. 💔
It raised my spirits today to see that Letters to an American has expanded the reach of Unleashed.
However, I worry that Substack's reach and impact is not nearly enough.
Yesterday, I watched this hour discussion hosted by Partners4Democracy. Mara Liasson, E. J. Dionne, Frank Foer, and Michelle Cottle. https://partners4democracy.org/trials-triumphs-and-traps-video/ This discussion was the most honest assessment I have heard of the ways in which democracy is being systematically dismantled by the new republican party playbook. And how they are using the largest news media brands to amplify and solidify their plan.
George Packer confirmed my fears about the state of American journalism today this morning.
For 25 years, journalists have been scrambling to survive the damage done to their business model by the internet. Venerable outlets perish or self-mutilate; newer ones come and go in a flash; mountains of bait are thrown into the water to see what rises to the surface, producing trillions of bits of data to be collected and examined for financial clues. This exhausting effort consumes so much time and talent that it’s difficult to face the obvious truth: The for-profit model of journalism shows signs of being broken.
Great overview as usual David. On your tsunami of HCR subscribers, some of that even spilled over to us, thanks to your recommendation to Geopolitical Dispatch. I was wondering where they had all suddenly come from and learned a lesson in the power of the Substack network!
Thanks Ransom !!
Delighted to hear your thoughts ‘

Another excellent ‘Andelman Unleashed.’ Nobody sums up the week’s world like you do David. Loved cartoonist Brandan’s take on Bibi.

I read it on Heather's FB notes and had to subscribe. You keep good company. I'll have more to say after I read this one. Cheers, David
David let’s meet if you are in NYC?
