On-campus fever… The Trial goes on… Elections 2024: Europe, India… Blinken hits the road… Back to the closet in Iraq…Paris's Olympic speed bumps… Brazilian cartoonist Thiago on our global barbecue
For FAR right, you really hafta go to the Journal du Dimanche (under their new ownership) from which virtually the entire staff has decamped now or Valeurs Actuels (from which a friend of mine decamped to Les Echos!!) .....
Very interesting. Most of my residence in France was in the Midi, stretching from Nice to Marseille- the crucible of the modern far-right, and not pretty.
You are correct to report the impact of Israel's fight for its life as seen by our European partners. Without our leadership here at home, they are left to flounder in their own divisive politics.
Very interesting sub-themes in this edition, David.
What do you think? Figaro calls itself center- and center-right, historically accurate; but I'd wonder whether Figaro isn't more right- and far-right. Their own histories of themselves, from 1900 to 1950, are mostly revisionism.
Currently, in addition to touting the Yellow Vests, they regularly cover Eric Zemmour, head of the Reconquête party (the name itself is sinister), and anti-Arab provocateur and metropolitan chauvinist extraordinaire. I'm sure you're aware of all this. But what you may have missed is their link to N. America. One regular Figaro columnist is Mathieu Bock-Côté, an ideological pal of Zemmour, and who is now the standard-bearer of right-wing cultural nationalism in Quebec, at least in mass media. That focus is on forced assimilationism, anti-Arab-immigration, and a copy-paste of 'Republican French dress codes', etc.
What an interesting news round up, David! Thank you. I am a Brazilian by birth who is reconnecting with that country’s story, I found the note about Thiago to be really interesting!
Good question ... it will be fun to add up the airmiles he's booked at the end of each year ... not an impossible tasik !!
That is SO kind of you, Kay !
I do try to find something in every issue that will really move most of my readers !!
AND I grateful to have attentive & professional readers !!!
Naw.....I fixed it ... always wanna have the archives PERFECT !!!

What ? It hasn’t moved to Connecticut ??
(So sorry, changing & reminding my copy editor!!)
Has Blinken been on the road more than Kerry or Clinton? He certainly deserves the Andelman peripatetic award.
And good to see Johnson noted.

Stamford? Last time I checked, the university in Palo Alto is Stanford.
Really Janet, jumping on a typo is called Gotcha.
When I went to college it was frowned upon.
