I don’t think the grasses were planted as such; species invaded spaces no longer in use by agriculture. David, I remember well a crossing from Austria in 1982 into Communist Chechoslovakia when of all things the rental car broke down; sitting at the end of an assault rifle by an armed guard for six hours awaiting a replacement vehicle was terrifying to my younger self. The smell of diesel permeating the air always, people seeking newspapers for any of the world outside. The folks in the countryside planted their flower boxes, cared for their chickens and all who could purchased the same vehicle for travel within never without the barbed wire confines of the nation. So pleased the revolution freed them from their “cages.” If I were Japanese would likewise object to “Barbenheimer.” Thank you for your excellence in reporting from the other side of the USA 🇺🇸.
