But chaos afterwards !

Actually some of these are just the equivalent of subsets of US parties but calling themselves different names !

I suspect you are right on as usual Walter, but I have hesitated getting down in the muck of American politics beyond monitoring perspectives from abroad !!!

Very prudent and good. Meanwhile, I feel so young... as if I just turned 20 and it's Spain, 1936...

Excellent analysis, David! Et quel soulagement! If the notoriously unruly French (queue, quelle queue?) can rally together to block the far right extremists, surely the American Dems and Progressives can do the same. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

A very clear summary of where we are now. I take solace from an an aspect of French life that normally exasperates me to no end: It’s the bureaucrats who keep the country running and they will slog on. Also, everyone needs a break from all this drama and summer is here. France is already largely in summer holiday mode. It’s important to recharge and refresh because the rentrée in September will be a rocky one. Finally, very cool you’re launching a food site!

The ancient Chinese philosophers believed chaos held opportunities.. It's a matter of clear vision and taking action. JFK believed in the concept that crisis equals opportunity. It's harder in the states right now.

Where are the young people, who figured so importantly in the politics of the past? I would love to hear about them! Gen Z in the US is the largest body of voters to arrive next on the American political scene. They have already announced their commitment to vote because they're aware they're going to inherit what the next group of leaders creates.. i.e. DJT. Of course, I believe the French youth are, for the most part, better educated than their Americans in their age group. Americans and the American press are invested in fear and chaos.

I’m fascinated with the number of parties in France! 🇫🇷 It makes for an exciting election!

David, I've always been a believer that chaos holds opportunities... I'm curioius to hear about your thoughts and opinions re Gen Z in France. They're very vocal about their intent to vote for change in the US. Except for Mark Frost, a millennial, who was backed by the Obamas in Fla. it's hard to tell what's next. Congress sometimes resembles a geriatric ward alongside followers of DJT.

wow, so much happening over there! Glad to receive your insights! I'm in MX which is currently pretty quiet. The usual cartel shootouts and threats and some blackmai of small business owners. Two young Americans were murdered by the cartel while camping close to the US border.

Mx. has a new Prez. A woman from a wealty, connected family, who is a climate scientist but I"ve not heard much about changes about climate change. The thing is that close to all of Mexico's economy is based on fossil fuels. When I was still in Oaxaca City, which is south of here, there were student demonstrations. Army trucks with 8 soldiers patroling with guns daily. A good friend told me that they're sent out with one bullet. That it's all the govt can afford. She claims it's why they look so stern... my intuition tells me they are afraid. And that little voice is rarely wrong. Mx remains a very divided society with pockets of change that, as always, tend to be related touniversity students. As a whole, the people are very kind. They love their music, dancing and celebrating life.

Excellent article. I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw the news last night - schadenfreude or not, this Brit did not want France to fall into either turmoil or far-right mayhem. Good point on the Parti Socialiste's surge; as Macron's former party, I imagine Ensemble are far more willing to work with them than Melenchon's lot.

Great analysis David, it clears up a lot of ambiguity.

Still, no one is mentioning the elephant in the room, looming collapse of America into the arms of MAGA.

On the one hand, seems to me the French center, scared to Bejaysus, would rally to anything-but-Trumpism; on the other hand, French nativists and fascists will hold rallies and street parties. What say, David?
